Retro Film Recommendations: Football Casual Culture

Posted by Retro Star London on 30th Nov 2022

Football casual culture was a huge cultural phenomenon in Britain during the 1980s and 90s, and was known for hooliganism and the wearing of designer sportswear label tracksuits such as EllesseFilaSergio Tacchini, Lacoste, Hackett, and Fred Perry. These designer labels would throw police off the scent, as well as intimidating rivals. Tracksuits were worn in a variety of bold hues, and yet team colours were avoided so that hooligans could enter pubs of rival supporters. Stylistically, some of the casuals' clothing features have been compared to those of the 1960s mods, particularly the primary block colours, argyle print, and overall clean-cut aesthetic.

Unsurprisingly, a fair few films and TV series have been made inspired by this British subculture, and not only are they a great watch for the drama and historical interest, but also for the plethora of retro sportswear and style inspiration. Here's Retro Star London's list of our favourite films about football casuals, containing plenty of great terrace fashion.

1. The Firm (2006)

The Firm is a 2006 film remake of a 1989 television drama of the same name, about the protagonist Dom's initiation into a group of West Ham hooligans. Set in the 80s, the film shows plenty of 80s retro tracksuits being worn, from brands like Fila and Sergio Tacchini. Dom looks up to Bex, the group's ringleader, who's performing a balancing act between his city job and violent weekends as part of the casuals.

2. The Football Factory (2004)

In this film, Tommy (Danny Dyer) is a Chelsea-supporting hooligan who leads a life of drinking and violence. While his girlfriend and family try to pull him away from the firm, the excitement and community prove to be too seductive.

3. Green Street (2005)

Green Street, starring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam, shared hooliganism and terrace culture with an American audience. It follows the American protagonist's integration into a fictional West Ham firm, called Green Street Elite (GSE), and the violent trials and tribulations with other opposing firms in different parts of the country.

4. I.D. (1995)

I.D. is focused around a fictional football club firm, Shadwell Town (a combination of West Ham and Millwall), which differentiates it from other football terrace films. It tells the story of an undercover cop who infitrates a football hooligan gang, who ends up getting a bit too involved in the lifestyle. Released in 1995, it is the first football casuals film to be seen on the big screen.

5. Awaydays (2009)

Awaydays is another football hooliganism film about casuals initiation, this one called 'The Pack', attached to the Tranmere Rovers in the 1980s. This is a great film for 80s casual classics fashion, with plenty of retro Adidas tracksuits, Adidas sambas, and Fred Perry polo shirts and jackets. It is a coming of age story about growing up in a working-class environment, with football terraces as a dramatic background.
