About our brands: Gabicci
Posted by Retro Star London on 27th Jun 2022
Gabicci was started in London in 1973 by friends Jack Sofier and Alex Pyser, after a holiday in the Italian seaside town Gabicci Mare. Through the brand, the founders could combine their knowledge of the East End rag trade with their appreciation for the sharpness and sophistication of Italian style. Despite being originally targeted at a more mature customer, Gabicci gained immense popularity with the youth, finding its place among several prominent subcultures throughout the 20th and 21st centuries: Rude Boys, Suedeheads, Rasta's, Northern Soul, Acid Jazz, Casuals, and most famously, the Mods.
While the Italian knitwear market was booming in America in the 50s and 60s, it had not found its way to the UK yet, and Gabicci managed to fill this gap in the market. In the 70s, Gabicci was a regular sight at the reggae dance halls throughout the UK. Reggae singer Gregory Isaacs is heavily associated with the label, having often worn their clothing, and his widow worked with the brand on a capsule collection of vintage Gabicci designs in 2020. The 80s saw Gabicci clothing being worn on the football terraces, with 'casuals' wearing the brand on game days along with other brands such as Lacoste, Fila and Sergio Tacchini.
Known for their well-fitted knit polos, jumpers, and shirts emblazoned with the iconic gold 'G', Gabicci pride themselves on their fine quality. With their rich cultural history in mind, their current pieces are inspired by archival photographs and original samples from the 70s and 80s, keeping their legacy going strong.
Gabicci remains a brand of unmatched quality and style, popular worldwide among those who appreciate high-quality, retro-inspired menswear. It was been worn by the likes of ska band The Specials, Bob Marley, and more recently musicians Labrinth and Maverick Sabre. Check out our selection of Gabicci menswear here.
